About Uniqlay and Founder Lynn Chang:

Process:

We are committed to the tradition of handmaking - starting from the preparation of the clay and the manipulation on the potters wheel to the hand-brush glazing. Every piece is handmade on the potter’s wheel with neither molds nor press dies.

Each piece endures a minimum of two firings at over 2000 °F for 12 hours.

The firing process transforms soft and malleable clay into strong and durable stoneware that’s robust enough for daily use while beautifully displaying unique handmade qualities.

"My home life and upbringing are living proof that seemingly very different (or even conflicting) cultures can embrace their differences and appreciate how much those differences enrich our world  -- through the process of understanding each other, your knowledge of the world expands. I believe this is a dialogue worth having. The more we celebrate diversity, the more we can understand without prejudice and come together."

'Winter Ember' Ceramic Mug(初红杯)

$62

Our limited edition Uniqlay x Us Two Tea Winter Ember Mugs are handmade and painted by Lynn, the founder of Uniqlay. The mug is inspired by a famous poem written by renowned Song dynasty poet, Du Lei:

寒夜客来茶当酒,
With a guest on a cold winter night, I served tea as wine

竹炉汤沸火初红。
Water boiling, the charcoal of the bamboo stove burned bright red

寻常一样窗前月,
The moon ahead the window would have otherwise been ordinary

才有梅花便不同。
If not for those new plum blossoms transforming the night sky

Hand-painted layer upon layer, each color has a meaning rooted in this poem. The bright orange-red at the bottom depicts the warmth radiating from the bamboo stove; the blended layers of yellow ochre and burnt umber imitate the flowing tea shared between guest and poet. The deep blues and blacks represent the night sky, and the shimmering sparkles brushed across the top mimic the plum blossoms floating freely about, transforming our otherwise ordinary nights.

These beautifully contrasting colors together illustrate perfectly the theme of this collaboration: finding warmth even in the coldest winters through the presence of our loved ones.

Please note that the tea and mug will ship separately due to different business locations. The mugs are dishwasher safe and microwave safe.
